Why speed matters in a Discord anti-nuke bot, and what affects it

Title card for the article about speed in a Discord anti-nuke bot

When someone starts deleting channels, every second matters. A fast anti-nuke bot can stop an attack after one deletion. A slow one finishes its response after the damage is done. Here is what controls that speed and how to judge claims about it.

How detection works

Discord sends the bot events over a live connection as things happen: a member was banned, a channel was deleted, a role changed. The bot looks up who did it, checks that person against your whitelist and rules, and acts. Nothing is polled on a timer, so the first delay is how fast the bot receives and handles the event.

What makes a bot slower or faster

  • Where it is hosted. A bot on a stable, well-connected server reaches Discord with low latency. An overloaded or distant host adds delay.
  • Doing too much per event. A bot that runs heavy work before checking a ban or deletion reacts later than one that checks the rules first.
  • Discord rate limits. Actions are limited by Discord, so a bot that needs many API calls to respond will be slower than one that needs few.
  • Permissions and role position. If the bot cannot act on the offender because of the role hierarchy, speed is irrelevant.

Judging speed claims

Be careful with a single impressive number. A bot's reaction time varies with load, the kind of event and Discord's own delays. Better evidence includes how the bot behaves in a real test and whether it shows its connection health publicly.

Korzax's home page shows the bot's current gateway latency when its status service is reachable, rather than a fixed claim. You can also run the raid simulation to see the intended order of events: detect, punish, restore.

Speed is not enough on its own

  • A narrow whitelist, so fewer people can cause damage in the first place.
  • Backups, so a fast response still has something to restore from.
  • Sensible permissions, so one stolen account cannot do everything. See the protection checklist.

Test it safely

Create a throwaway server, add the bot, enable Anti-Nuke and use a second account without whitelisting to try deleting a test channel. Watch what happens and how long recovery takes. The settings are explained in the Anti-Nuke documentation.
