Discord welcome messages: ideas, variables and setup

Title card for the guide to Discord welcome messages

A welcome message is the first thing a new member reads. A good one is short, friendly and tells them where to go next.

What a good welcome message includes

  • A greeting that names the member.
  • One line about what your server is for.
  • Where to read the rules and where to get help.
  • A first action: introduce yourself, pick roles, or say hello in a channel.

Variables you can use in Korzax

Variables are replaced with real values when the message is sent. The common ones are {user} for a mention of the new member, {server_name} for your server's name and {server_membercount} for the current number of members. There are more for the member's name, nickname, ID, avatar and dates; the full list is in the welcome documentation.

Three templates to start from

  • Simple: Welcome to {server_name}, {user}! You are member #{server_membercount}.
  • Helpful: Hi {user}, glad you are here. Read the rules, then say hello and tell us what you are into.
  • Support-focused: Welcome {user}! If you need help, open a ticket and a staff member will join you.

Plain text or embed?

Plain text is quick and works everywhere. An embed lets you add a colour, a title and an image, which suits larger communities. Korzax's welcome page previews both before you save, so you can check how it looks.

Pair it with the rest of the entry flow

Welcome messages work best after verification and before members need support. That order keeps spam out and gives real members a clear path.
